Chapter Thirteen
Felicity
It was strange, traveling down the Breeding Sector and into the Core clasping hands with the Smold. She’d never in all her wildest, private daydreams imagined she’d find herself favorably interacting with any alien on the Hub. Choosing to touch one, and finding comfort in the touch.
“What types of food do you eat?” asked Cyndar as they approached the market.
Felicity’s face flushed at the considerate question. The meals she’d taken on Earth felt like memories so distant and faded they might as well have been dreams. As for what she’d eaten since arriving at the Hub . . . well, that was best described as a hideous mixture of swill and refuse.
“Why don’t you choose something for me?” she asked by way of response.
Cyndar beamed at her, his teeth flashing white through his auburn mustache. For the briefest of moments as she watched the alien carefully lift produce and sniff it, his nose wrinkling at the things he found unsavory, Felicity felt normal. It was almost like shopping for groceries with a new boyfriend.
Except Cyndar isn’t your boyfriend, her mind hissed. He’s your owner.
Felicity’s joy morphed into irritation.
She slid her hand from Cyndar’s grasp, fumbling in her mind for some reason for the sudden withdrawal.
“Here,” she said, holding her hands out to him. “Let me help you hold some of that.”
The alien nodded and handed her the produce. She smiled at the way some of the fruits and vegetables had little char marks on them from the brief contact with the parts of Cyndar’s Smold flesh.
As they were checking out—an unnervingly human process, complete by with the merchant weighing the produce and asking to scan Cyndar’s badge—two Cephs approached them.
“Your Highness,” said the first, its bubbling voice sticky. “The Chief Officer has need of your presence.”
Cyndar frowned, the human parts of his cheeks beginning to ash and blacken. Felicity reached for his hand, giving it a quick squeeze.
“It’s okay,” she said softly. “I was going to eat, anyway. I don’t mind waiting in the room.”
Cyndar looked down at her, perturbed. But he nodded.
Turning back to the Cephs, he said, “Very well. But I must return my breeder to our quarters.”
“No time,” said the second guard. “Slep desires your immediate presence.”
A low growl rumbled in Cyndar’s throat, and Felicity withdrew her hand before something bad happened. The scar that wrapped around her wrist and palm tingled from the memory of the Smold’s lava.
“Come, Felicity,” said Cyndar, his human eye narrowed at the guards. “You will have to be content eating in the insectoid’s receptionist’s office.”
Felicity nodded, glancing around at the aliens milling about. The normal feeling she’d been experiencing earlier was gone. She felt the strangeness of the Hub sweep down over her again, feeling like the odd creature out.
And feeling different made her feel observed.
Sure enough, as they walked, Felicity couldn’t help but notice the many eyes that raked over her bodily hungrily. Her aching stomach rumbled, and she ran a finger over the green and yellow and purple produce in the bag on her wrist.
